Second-seeded Eastern Connecticut State scored four runs in the sixth inning, then held off a ninth-inning comeback bid by third-seeded Southern Maine to remain undefeated in the Little East Conference baseball tournament with a 4-2 win Thursday at Providence, Rhode Island.

USM (18-20) outhit the Warriors 13-10 but was held scoreless until a two-out rally in the ninth. Doubles by Chris Quigley and Tom Vesosky and a triple by Kyle Douin brought the potential tying run to the plate, but Jason Komulainen struck out to end the game.

Vesosky was 4 for 5, and Quigley finished 3 for 4.

USM plays an elimination game against top-seeded Rhode Island College at 9 a.m. Friday.

SOFTBALL

MAINE 1, UMASS LOWELL 0: Caitlyn Fallon allowed just four hits, and Krista Francia singled home Jasmine Gray in the fourth inning as the sixth-seeded Black Bears (15-37) won another elimination game in the America East tournament, ousting the fourth-seeded River Hawks (21-29-1) in Baltimore.

Maine faces Binghamton on Friday. The Black Bears still need four wins over the next two days to win the title out of the losers’ bracket.

RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE 4, SOUTHERN MAINE 3: Amanda Conti capped a two-out rally with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning as the fifth-seeded Anchorwomen (19-18) eliminated the third-seeded Huskies (20-21) from the Little East Conference tournament in Mansfield, Connecticut.

USM tied the game with two runs in the sixth, taking advantage of two errors. Madison Day drove in the tying run with a fielder’s choice grounder.

Dora Kulis opened the scoring for the Huskies with an RBI double in the second inning after Hannah Shiel was hit by a pitch.

It was the second loss of the day for USM, which dropped into the losers’ bracket after a 5-4 loss to third-seeded UMass Dartmouth. The Corsairs scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the seventh.

Belle Snyder and Kendall Migliorini each had two hits and an RBI for USM.

WENTWORTH 7, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 0: Sixth-seeded UNE (12-27) was eliminated from the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament as No. 3 seed Wentworth (27-12-1) shut out the Nor’easters in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Kenzie Bessette was 3 for 4 for UNE, which finished with 10 hits.
