BOOTHBAY — The DaPonte String Quartet launches its summer chamber music festival “Late in the Season” at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens this month, featuring guest artists Edward Allman on double bass, Joshua Gordon on cello, and Mark Simons on clarinet.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 22 and 27 at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens’ Visitor Center, 132 Botanical Gardens Drive. Tickets are $25 and include admission to the gardens. They are available at www.DaPonte.org or 529-4555.

The festival returns for its sixth year to the stunning setting, one of Maine’s top tourist attractions, in the gardens’ music-friendly Visitor Center, with its lovely view of the landscaping. The concert ticket includes admission to the gardens, and concertgoers are encouraged to take advantage of the setting before settling in for an evening of chamber music.

The festival is a perfect way to cap off the summer, with a late-season music treat, surrounded by late summer blooms. It features works by composers late in their careers, at the height of their creative power.

For Festival I on Aug. 22, Allman and Gordon will join the quartet for an evening of string quintets by Dvorak and Schubert along with Joseph Bodin de Boismortier’s Sonata in D Minor Opus 40 No. 1, a duet for cello and double bass.

Festival II on Aug. 27 features Beethoven’s String Quartet in C# Minor Opus 131 along with Ingolf Dahl’s Concerto à Tre for clarinet, violin and cello and Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Opus 115.

The DaPonte Quartet, now celebrating its 21st year in the state, performs more than 40 concerts a year across the state.
