
The Bowdoin College men’s soccer team scored two goals in the first half against the University of New England to earn a season opening 2-0 win on Thursday evening.
The Polar Bears (1-0) begin the season with a victory for the fifth consecutive year. The Nor’Easters are still in search of their first win, falling to 0-3.
Bowdoin got on the board just 5:02 in as Levi Morant put a shot away from the right corner of the 6-yard box off a feed from Jason Oliver and Wilson MacMillan.
Will Herman doubled Bowdoin’s lead with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. Matty McColl capitalized on a foul along the right side to connect with Herman on the opposite post. The ball skirted through traffic before finding Herman on the far side for a redirect.
The Polar Bears outshot the Nor’Easters by a dominating 26-2 margin. Stevie Van Siclen made a pair of saves in his return to the net for Bowdoin. Will Shearon stopped seven shots for UNE.
Bowdoin earned 22 corner kicks while surrendering none to the hosts.
The Polar Bears travel to Amherst on Saturday afternoon for a 2:30 p.m. NESCAC opener.
Girls soccer
SOUTH CHINA — Morse
and Erskine Academy played to a 2-2 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference draw.
The Eagles came out strong and had Morse on its heels for the first 20 minutes and scored their first goal during that time on a corner kick scrum.
The Shipbuilders eventually gained control of the midfield and began to put pressure on the Eagles defense. Morse tied the score when Micailah Albertson took the ball down the sideline and fed Emily Martin, who found the back of the net.
The second half saw a lot of play in the neutral zone until Morse’s Julia Cliffe fed a nice pass inside to Julia Goddard for a 2-1 Shipbuilders lead.
But, the Eagles put the pressure on Morse and broke through with seven minutes remaining to tie the score.
Neither team produced a solid scoring opportunity the rest of the way as Morse left the pitch with a 2-0-1 mark and visits Leavitt on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Marissa Parks had 12 saves in the Morse cage.
Volleyball
BRUNSWICK — Cape Elizabeth picked up a 3-0 victory over Brunswick in the Dragons’ debut at Brunswick High School.
Sophie Katz led Brunswick (0-2) with three service aces and two digs, while Mackenzie Burrows provided solid leadership.
The Capers ( 3- 0) captured set wins of 25-18, 25- 11 and 25-10.
Brunswick hosts North Yarmouth Academy on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Boys soccer
BATH — Michael Sprague scored a first-half goal as Erskine Academy downed Morse, 2-0, in KVAC action on McMann Field.
The Shipbuilders fell to 0- 2-1 and visits Maranacook on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Leading 1-0, the Eagles doubled their lead on a Travis Dow goal with 9:31 remaining in the opening frame.
Morse’s defense was led by senior captain Dom Green and sophomore Asa Hodgdon. Goaltender Miles Bobbe turned away 13 shots in the loss.
Erskine goaltender David McGraw had seven saves.
