CASTINE — The Bowdoin College men’s basketball team had five players in double digits as the Polar Bears took a 92-44 win over Maine Maritime Academy Tuesday night.
The Polar Bears are 8-0, while the Mariners dropped to 1-7.
Keegan Pieri led the Polar Bears with 16 points, Lucas Hausman added 15, Matt Palecki 13, and John Swords and Neil Fuller 10 each. Palecki added 11 boards to his 13 points to record a double double.
Garrett Libby paced the Mariners with 16 points.
The Mariners took their only lead of the game when Libby opened the game with a 3-pointer. Matt Mathias quickly evened the game with a trey for Bowdoin, sparking a 17-1 run that gave the Polar Bears a 17-4 lead when Grant White hit a jumper with 13:23 left in the opening half. Maine Maritime got as close as nine, 17- 8, when Brad Reed connected from downtown with 11:18 left in the first.
Bowdoin used a 15-0 scoring run, spanning five minutes to lead 35-9 with 4:57 left before the break. Six different players scored in the run for the Bears, led by Hausman’s three points. Bowdoin led 44-14 at halftime.
Pieri’s jumper at 18:58 in the second gave the Bears a 49-18 advantage and Bowdoin’s lead never dipped below 30 the remainder of the game.
The Polar Bears will close out their first semester with a home game Friday evening against Maine-Farmington at 7 p.m.
Men’s ice hockey
Bowdoin and the University of Southern Maine skated to a 3-3 overtime tie Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup at the USM Ice Arena.
The tie leaves Bowdoin with a 5-3-2 record heading into their end-of-the-semester exam break and the holidays. Southern Maine moves to 4-5-1 overall.
Bowdoin took a 2-1 lead in a fast-paced first period on a power-play goal from Harry Matheson at 7:19 and a lastminute tally from Kendall Culbertson.
Lorne Miller had the only goal of the middle period to get the Huskies even at 2-2.
The Huskies claimed a 3-2 lead early in the third period as Zach Dymock stuffed home a pass from Tyler Simmons for his first goal of the season. Stephen Gallo picked up the other assist.
Connor Quinn got the equalizer for the Polar Bears at 15:09 of the period, beating USM goalie Josh Hillegas from the left-wing circle. Matt Rubinoff had the lone assist.
In the five-minute overtime, the Polar Bears had the best opportunity to score as Hillegas stopped a shot and Colin Downey hit the post on the rebound.
The Polar Bears had a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal in the extra session.
Southern Maine finished the game with a 34-33 edge in shots on goal. Hillegas made 30 saves between the pipes for the Huskies while Max Fenkell stopped 31 shots at the other end.
The Polar Bears return to action on Jan. 7 when they host the University of New England.
