BRUNSWICK — The DaPonte String Quartet will present a lecture and performance at Curtis Memorial Library 12:15 to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8.
The event is free and open to the public.
The quartet will speak to the profound changes that took place in music over the course of the 19th century. Quartet members will demonstrate how the philosopher Immanuel Kant, in his 1790 “Critique of Judgement,” challenged Ludwig van Beethoven to grow further and revolutionize the art of music.
Beethoven responded to the challenge with his “C-Sharp Minor String Quartet Op. 131” which will be featured in the concert portion of the presentation.
The DaPonte String Quartet is celebrating its 22nd anniversary year. The ensemble was founded in Philadelphia and moved to Maine on a Rural Residency Grant established by the National Education Association and Chamber Music of America.
The mission of the quartet is to connect audiences to composers by bringing to life the human context of each score’s creation.
