The Polar Bears totaled 72 points, trailing just Williams (143) and MIT (142).
Other top finishers on the track included Olivia MacKenzie’s runner-up finish in the 5,000 (17:36.02), Chantal Croteau’s fourth-place finish in the 1,000 ( 2: 59.61) and Michele Kaufman’s fifth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (9.13). In addition, Bowdoin’s distance medley relay team of Caroline Tory, Emily Clark, Maggie Bryan and Madelena Rizzo took second place (12:30.66).
In the field events, Erin Silva placed third in the pole vault with a height of 11- 05.75. Hayleigh Kein placed fifth in the high jump (5-00.25) while Laura Peterson took fifth in the long jump ( 17- 01.50). Annie Huyler carded 3,031 points to take seventh overall in the pentathlon.
Behind a quartet of winning performances, the Bowdoin men placed fifth at the New England Division III Championship meet Saturday at Springfield College.
Coby Horowitz won the mile run for Bowdoin in a facility-record time of 4:13.05 to take first place. Freshman Chris Genco continued his breakout campaign with a first- place showing in the high jump 6- 04.50 meters), winning a jump-off to take the crown.
Bowdoin’s distance relay team of Alex Williams, Malik McKnight, Isaac May and Horowitz took first in a trackrecord time of 10:18.80, just 1.74 seconds off of the New England record. James Boeding, Colin Ogilvie, Colin Fong and Matthew Hillard won the 4 x 800 meter relay for the Polar Bears in another track record time of 7: 50.59, 1.46 seconds off of the New England mark.
Other strong showings for Bowdoin included Matt Hillard’s second-place finish in the 1,000 ( 2: 29.11), Sam Chick taking fourth in the 600 ( 1: 22.53) and Sam Seekins placing fourth in the 5,000 (15:06.29).
The4x400relayteamof Riker Wikoff, Brett Stein, Chick and Matthew Gamache finished in third place (3:25.85).
Women’s basketball
Jill Henrikson of Bath scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Bowdoin to a 53-37 victory over Wesleyan in the New England Small College Athletic Conference quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Morrell Gymnasium.
The third- seeded Polar Bears improved to 19-6 and remained unbeaten all-time in NESCAC Tournament games at Morrell Gymnasium (22-0).
The sixth-seeded Cardinals finished their season at 14-9.
Bowdoin advances to the NESCAC semifinals for the 12th consecutive season and will face Tufts at Amherst College this upcoming Saturday. Tip- off times for the semifinals will be announced later today.
Henrikson hit five of nine from the field, including three 3-pointers and all nine free throws she took to go with her 12 boards and four assists. She was the lone player in the contest to finish in double figures.
Kaitlin Donahoe pitched in nine points for the Polar Bears, who also got seven points from Allie Piscina.
Eileen Gaffney finished with nine points and seven rebounds in the loss for Wesleyan.
The Polar Bears connected on just 31.5 percent from the field, but the Cardinals hit just 24.6 percent. Bowdoin held a 46-44 edge in rebounding and connected on 14-20 free throws while Wesleyan attempted just one in the entire game.
Mens basketball
Wesleyan University won its first NESCAC Tournament game since 2003 in a 78-59 win over Bowdoin in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament on Saturday afternoon at Middletown, Conn.
With the win, the thirdseeded Cardinals ( 20- 5) advance to the tournament semifinals and will play second seeded Middlebury in a game at top-seeded Amherst this upcoming Saturday.
The sixth- seeded Polar Bears saw their season close with a record of 17-8.
Bowdoin seniors Will Hanley and Ryan O’Connell both finished with 22 points in the setback. Hanley grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out three assists, finishing his career with 1,490 points (sixth all-time at Bowdoin) and 883 rebounds (second all-time).
O’Connell hit five 3-pointers to finish with 200 in his career, becoming just the third Polar Bear to reach the plateau.
The Cardinals used a 14-2 run near the end of the first half to take command, turning a tight 22- 20 Wesleyan edge into a 36-22 margin with 38 seconds left in the period. Shasha Brown, who netted a team-high 21 points, scored 10 of the Cardinals’ 14 points during the decisive run.
Bowdoin held a 42-35 edge in rebounding, but hit just 37.7 percent of its shots. The Cardinals committed just five turnovers in the game.
Women’s ice hockey
Kayla Lessard made 38 saves as the Polar Bears bounced back from a Friday night loss to the Jeffs with a 2- 2 tie with Amherst on Senior Day at Sidney J. Watson Arena on Saturday.
The Polar Bears moved to 11-9-4 (9-6-1 NESCAC), while Amherst stands at 19-4-1 (13-2- 1 NESCAC). The tie clinched the third seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament for Bowdoin, which will host sixth- seeded Williams this upcoming Saturday at 1 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
Amherst has secured the second seed and will host seventh seeded Connecticut College Saturday, also at 1 p.m.
Bowdoin skated to a twogoal lead in the opening period, starting when Kim Tess- Wanat picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone. She created a 2-on-1 advantage and fed Kayte Holtz with a nice crossice pass for a goal at 8:17.
Dominique Lozzi picked up a loose puck behind the net and beat Amherst’s Sinead Murphy with a back-handed shot at 11: 21 to double the Polar Bear lead.
The Jeffs peppered the net in the second period, taking 20 shots and tying the game on a goal each from Emily Flom and Emily Vitale.
Lessard made 30 of her 38 saves in the final two frames and overtime. Murphy had 17 saves for the Jeffs.
On Friday, Josie Fisher scored a pair of goals to propel Amherst to a 5-2 win over Bowdoin at Sidney J. Watson Arena.
In addition to Fisher’s two tallies, Stephanie Clegg had a pair of assists for the Jeffs.
Bowdoin received goals from Tess-Wanat and Shelagh Merrill.
Men’s ice hockey
The Polar Bears continued their recent scoring spree, defeating Connecticut College 6-4 on Saturday afternoon to clinch the second seed for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament.
The Polar Bears have won four straight, outscoring opponents 25-11 during the streak, and improved to 15-5-3 (12-3-3 NESCAC. Bowdoin will host Trinity in a NESCAC quarterfinal at Watson Arena this upcoming Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Camels fell to 6-15-3 (4- 12-2 NESCAC).
Sophomore forwards Ollie Koo and Harry Matheson both had a goal and two assists to lead the visitors. Colin Downey, Jordan Lalor and Timothy McGarry all finished with one goal and one assist for Bowdoin, while netminder Steve Messina stopped 21 shots en route to the victory.
The Polar Bears took a 3-1 lead with 4:28 remaining in the opening period. After a Lalor score broke the 1- 1 deadlock, Downey made a wraparound move to draw the Camel defense in tight and assisted McGarry for a onetimer from the high slot. Bowdoin held a 10-6 advantage on shots in the opening frame.
The Camels closed the gap to 3- 2 with a shorthanded goal, but Bowdoin responded just 31 seconds later as Koo buried his ninth goal of the season on the power play.
Leading 4-3 in the third peroid, Downey made it a 5- 3 game with the goal that proved to be the difference. Koo and Matheson assisted. Mattheson added an empty netter with 1:56 remaining to put Bowdoin on top 6-3.
On Friday, Lalor and Downey both had four-point games as 14th-ranked Bowdoin rolled to a 9-2 NESCAC win at Tufts at Valley Forum II.
Lalor had four assists, while Downey finished with a goal and three assists. Fifteen Bowdoin players scored points, including six with more than one. Matheson recorded two goals with an assist, while Koo tallied two goals.
The Polar Bears jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first period, chasing Tufts starting goalie Scott Barchard at 14:16. Eight Polar Bears contributed to the barage, with Downey scoring a goal with two assists in the period.
Tufts came out stronger in the second, but it didn’t last. Evan Story scored for the Jumbos at 1:15 to make it 4-1. However, Bowdoin added four more goals to take an 8- 1 advantage.
Tufts switched goalies again, replacing Evin Koleini with Brian Phillips. Of the 10 Bowdoin players recording points in the period, Daniel Weiniger had a goal and an assist, while Lalor had two assists.
Danny Palumbo finished the scoring with the Polar Bears’ ninth goal at the 18:18 mark of the third period.
Bowdoin finished with a 45- 34 advantage in shots. Messina was steady in goal with 32 saves.
