Operating three retail stores and one chocolate factory, Wilbur’s of Maine is a 33- year-old family operated company started under the leadership of Tom Wilbur and Catherine Carty-Wilbur. The company is now entering its second generation of ownership as Andrew Wilbur, Tom and Catherine’s son, prepares to take control.

Always a forerunner in the chocolate field, Wilbur’s of Maine offers such delights as Melt-A-Way truffles, Maine Sea Salt Caramels and panned chocolate items, many of which Andrew was the innovator.

Educated at the University of Maine and University of Southern Maine, Andrew has a B.S. in zoology and a master’s in teaching and learning. After 10 years of teaching, Andrew rejoined his family at the chocolate factory in 2008.

“I decided to rejoin the business with the intent of maintaining Wilbur’s of Maine as a family owned and operated business,” Andrew said. “I am excited that this transition has begun and that my parents will be able to enjoy some more time to travel and relax. I plan to continue our recent efforts toward using locally sourced ingredients, improving recipes, introducing exciting new products, and creating Wilbur’s of Maine as a destination.”

Tom and Catherine are looking forward to staying involved, from a distance.

“We’re ready to hand off the reigns to Andy’s very capable hands,” said Tom. “We’re excited to help implement his plans for Wilbur’s future.”

With the company’s recently obtained Chase Bank’s Mission Main Street grant, the gears are in motion to expand the customer experience with more involved classes and workshops, new birthday/event space and new candy making processes Andrew has been preparing to try.

“It’s an exciting time for Wilbur’s of Maine and I’m proud to be at the forefront of what will certainly be positive change,” Andrew said.

The future
