FREEPORT

In a 24-hour food and fuel fundraising drive, Freeport Community Services and the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program both met their goals.

With a $10,000 goal met in Freeport, Downeast Energy also will donate $5,000 worth of heating oil to the organization.

“The amount of support we received over the weekend was overwhelming and we want to thank everyone who came out to give,” Sue Mack of Freeport Community Services said. “We are extremely grateful for Downeast Energy’s commitment to helping the community and would also like to thank our other major sponsors, Martin’s Point Health Care and Windpoint Foundation.”

Mack told The Times Record that the program was able to help 85 families last year. Organizers aimed to raise nearly triple last year’s donation total in response to cuts in federal heating assistance funds and the rising cost of oil.
