WESTPORT ISLAND — Two people stranded on Harper’s Island after their canoe sank were rescued by a Westport Island Fire Department skiff this afternoon, according to Coast Guard reports.
After water knocked out a cellphone aboard the canoe, the two reportedly swam to the island with no way to reach land.
The island, located in the middle of Montsweag Bay, is approximately one tenth of a mile from the mainland.
Petty Officer Jason Smith of the Coast Guard said that another party reported the stranded people on the island at 12:24 p.m. today, and a Coast Guard vessel was dispatched out of Boothbay in response.
Shortly after, a Westport Island Fire Department skiff was launched and reached the island around 1:20 p.m.
Coast Guard reports did not have further details about the identity of the people stranded on the island and a call to Westport Island Fire Chief
