WELLS — Cody Cousins broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning to lift the eighth-seeded Wells High School baseball team to an 8-3 Western Maine Class B baseball win in preliminary action on Tuesday over No. 9 Freeport.
The Falcons finished 7-10 and lose seniors Niko DiFazio and Joe Nixon to graduation.
The Warriors (10-7), who face top-seeded Lincoln Academy in the quarterfinals on Thursday, trailed 3-2, but tied the game in the fourth before a four-run fifth gave the hosts the lead.
Charlie Bell had a key two-run single in the big inning for Wells, while starting pitcher Bennie McMinis struck out 11, walked three and tossed a three-hitter.
Freeport jumped on top 2-0 in the second, with Thomas Cyr driving in a run with single. Wells tied the game in the bottom of the frame, but the Falcons claimed a 3-2 lead in the third.
Peter LaMagna and Jack Davenport pitched for Freeport. They combined to allow seven hits.
