Bath’s Leeman to represent U.S. in Belarus contest

BATH — The Young Rescuers USA program has selected Arielle Leeman of Bath as one of seven youth to represent the United States at the 2012 International Rally of Young Rescuers in Belarus.

The seven young people have distinguished themselves in youth leadership, rescue and fire programs in their communities, according to a news report.

“Arielle is an exceptional student, athlete and youth community leader. She has demonstrated a strong interest learning basic first aid and rescue, and is an upstanding young woman who will represent our country well at this international competition and rally,” said Silvia Moraru of South Portland, a Young Rescuers USA deputy program director.

“Our Young Rescuers USA team learn and compete in basic life safety competitions; enjoy excursions to cultural, scenic and historic sites throughout Belarus; and make lasting international friendships,” said Moraru.

Interact club promoting Project Linus

LISBON — Lisbon High School Interact member Emma Wilson recently introduced a new community service project to the club, Project Linus. Project Linus is a national volunteer organization providing blankets to children going through difficult times.

Named after the adorable blanket-toting character made famous in the “Peanuts” comic strip, blankets from Project Linus provide children with love, security warmth and comfort, according to a news release.

On June 15, Interact students, Lisbon adult and junior volunteers, and members of the Lisbon School Community gathered together to prepare blankets for distribution to various community agencies.

Blankets are also provided to children entering foster care, and to children in families experiencing challenges, such as house fires or serious illness of a parent or caregiver.

Blankets for Project Linus are all handmade and donated by wonderful volunteers called “Blanketeers.” Blankets are then inspected and tagged with special Project Linus tags and prepared for distribution. Local blanketeers range in age from young children (Girl Scout Daisies in Durham) to senior citizens. Blankets may be fleece, knit, crocheted or quilted.

Blankets may be dropped off locally at Marden’s in Lewiston, at Quilt Essentials in Auburn, or by contacting Androscoggin/Oxford County Coordinator Annette Wilson at 462-2274 (cell) or 353-7071 (home) or via e-mail at annettemw@roadrunner.com.
