NEWRY — Mike Doran of Topsham shot an opening round 72 to finish two shots out of first place in the 93rd Maine Amateur Golf Championship at Sunday River Golf Club on Tuesday.

Doran, who resides in Portland, trails leader Seth Sweet of Madison, who opened with a 70.

The second round of the three-round tournament is today, with the conclusion set for Thursday.

Sweet, who will attend Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., in the fall, sat at 2- under-par, the only player to finish under par in the opening round.

Mike O’Brien of Biddeford and Len Cole of Hampden were three shots back after opening-round 73s, while Augusta’s Jason Gall, Ryan Gay of Pittston, Johnny Hayes IV of Cape Elizabeth, Curtis Jordan of Portland and Winslow’s Matthew Loubier shot 74s.

Henry Fall of Harpswell stands six shots out of the lead after beginning with a 76, joining Bath’s JJ Harris, who shot matching 38s on the par-72 layout.

Joshua Jones of Brunswick shot a 78, while Bowdoin’s Jason Macdonald was at 80. Another shot back was Jordan Jones of Wiscasset, while Brunswick’s Scott Barnicle and Freeport’s Jack Wyman finished at 82.

Christopher Billings of Topsham shot an 83, and Nick Duncan of Topsham, Joe Messerman of Brunswick and Bradford Smith of Brunswick shot 91 each.
