TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Bowdoin College men’s cross country team finished 16th at the NCAA Division III Championship race on Saturday, hosted by Rose Hulman Institute in Indiana.

Sparking the Polar Bears were juniors Coby Horowitz and Sam Seekins, both of whom earned All- American honors.

Horowitz finished the 8K course in ninth place overall in a time of 24:45.2, just 19 seconds off the winning pace. His showing was the bestever for a Polar Bear in the NCAA Championships, besting the previous top showing of 11th, set by James Johnson in 1995. Seekins finished in 17th in a time of 24:51.2 to earn his first All-American nod.

Nicholas Saba battled through illness to finish in 154th (26:04.0), while Kevin Hoose took 171st (26:11.4). Gregory Talpey finished in 179th (26:14.8) to round out the top-five Bowdoin scorers. James Boeding (177th, 26:44.2) and Marcus Schneider (269th, 27:51.4) also competed for the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin’s total of 390 points placed the Bears right in the middle of the 32-team field. North Central won the Division III Championship with a score of 167, taking four of the top-36 scoring finishers.

Women’s ice hockey

Bowdoin suffered a 4-1 setback in its season debut at second-ranked Plattsburgh State University on Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first period, Plattsburgh State (5-0-1) broke through with just 1:06 gone in the second period on a Allison Era goals.

Less than two minutes later, Shannon Stewart made it 2-0, picking up a rebound from Breanne Bennett and Melissa McIver. McIver later scored for a three-goal lead.

After a Plattsburgh penalty and Bowdoin (0-1-0) timeout, the Polar Bears got on the board at the 14:44 mark of the second when Jay Greene’s shot from the point sailed past goaltender Sydney Aveson. Kenzie Novak and Ariana Bourque picked up assists.

Plattsburgh’s Alyssa Parke rounded out the scoring in the third.

The Cardinals held a 36-19 edge in shots as Tara Connolly made 32 stops for the Polar Bears.

The Polar Bears are set to play its home opener on Tuesday evening at Watson Arena against UMass- Boston at 7 p.m.

Women’s basketball

Bowdoin opened the second half with a 14-0 run on its way to a 50-37 victory over Framingham State University (0-2) in the consolation game of the Babson Invitational Tournament at Staake Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears return home at 1-1.

Katie Donahoe scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Bowdoin, while Megan Phelps added six points, three blocks and a gamehigh 14 rebounds. Nina Hadzibabic chipped in with 11 points, Siena Mitman pulled down eight boards, and Shannon Brady and Sara Binkhorst each collected six caroms for the Polar Bears, who enjoyed a 52-29 rebounding advantage.

Framingham state was led by Kristen Hoffman with a game-high 17 points.

After taking a 20-15 halftime lead, Bowdoin scored 14 straight points over the first six minutes to open up a commanding 34-15 advantage. Hadzibabic scored five of her 11 points during the decisive run.

In Friday’s Bowdoin opener, Rhode Island College built a 22-point second-half lead and withstood a late Bowdoin comeback attempt as the Anchorwomen defeated the Polar Bears 61-54.

The Anchorwomen were paced by Ashley O’Dell, who scored 14 points to go with six rebounds and seven assists, and Cara Paladino, who netted nine points while adding gamehighs of 14 rebounds, four blocked shots and five steals. RIC enjoyed a 46-35 rebound advantage.

Bowdoin received a double-double from Phelps, who shot 6-for-9 from the field to finish with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Donahoe tossed in 13 points and dished out three assists, and Brady shot 5-of-10 for 10 points and six boards in her collegiate debut.

The Polar Bears struggled through shooting woes throughout the contest, hitting just 34.5 percent of their field-goal attempts, including only 2-of-11 from 3-point range and only 57.1 percent of their free throws.

After trading hoops in the opening minute of play Rhode Island College jumped to a 13-7 lead on the strength of an 11-2 run over the next five minutes.

Bowdoin bounced right back with eight straight points and took a 14-13 lead on a layup by Brady with 11:48 left in the first half.

The Anchorwomen outscored the Polar Bears 15-8 for a 28-22 advantage at the break.

Men’s basketball

Bowdoin picked up its first win in a 72-63 win over Western New England in the third-place game of the Eastern Connecticut State Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (1-1) are set to return to action on Tuesday evening when they play at Saint Joseph’s at 7:30 p.m.

Andrew Madlinger was 6-for-6 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range to finish with 15 points. Keegan Pieri led the Polar Bears with 17 points and six rebounds, while Bryan Hurley tossed in 11 points and dished out 10 assists. Damon Alston had a gamehigh 20 points for Western New England.

Bowdoin held a 37-34 halftime edge and extended its lead to as many as 15 points in the second half. The Polar Bears owned a 38-37 edge on the boards, but hit on 46.4 percent of its shots, while holding their opponent to just 35 percent.

On Friday, Clark University’s Brian Vayda scored his team’s final 10 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with under five seconds remaining, to lift the Cougars to a 55-54 win over Bowdoin in the opening round of the Eastern Connecticut Tournament.

Bowdoin was led by 15 points from Madlinger and a 14-point, ninerebound showing from Pieri. Hurley had 10 points and six assists for the Polar Bears. Vayda led all scorers with 24 points for Clark while also grabbing seven rebounds.

Trailing 33-28 at the break, Bowdoin’s defense clamped down and held Clark scoreless for more that five minutes. The Polar Bears grabbed the lead after a Pieri hoop and the squads traded buckets until late in the period when Marko Peraica’s jumper with 22 seconds remaining gave Bowdoin a 54-52 lead.

After a timeout by Clark, Vayda netted the game-winning bucket with four seconds left.

Bowdoin hit 36 percent of its shots while Clark hit on 33 percent. The Polar Bears held a 43-33 edge on the glass, but committed 14 turnovers.

Swimming

Bowdoin took split-decisions at its season-opening meets at MIT on Saturday.

The Polar Bear women defeated Babson (183.00-101.00) and lost to MIT (224.00-87.00), while the men also beat Babson (201.00-105.00), but fell to MIT (241.00-70.00).

Bowdoin freshman Bridget Killian made a splash in her collegiate debut, winning the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:56.67 and taking a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:19.30.

Lela Garner and Katherine Foley tied for first in the 500 breaststroke in a time of 5:23.90, while Maeve O’Leary was second in 100 breaststroke (1:12.06) and third in 200 breaststroke (2:36.97). Katherine Foley was second in the 1,000 free (10:50.77), Kaley Kokomoor third in the 100 freestyle (57.26), and Caroline Moore third in the three-meter diving competition (192.40).

On the men’s side, Tom Kramer was second in both three-meter (226.75) and one-meter diving (256.95).

Other top finishes for the Polar Bear men included Ryan Peabody’s third in the 1,000 free (10:32.22), Basyl Stuyvesant’s third in the 100 backstroke (53.82), Chris Granata’s third in the 200 butterfly (1:57.93), and Ryan Kulesza’s third in the 200 IM (2:01.40).

Bowdoin’s 200 medley relay team of Teri Faller, O’Leary, Kelsey Goodwin and Tricia Hartley took third (1:54.57). while the men’s 200 medley relay squad of Stuyvesant, John Lagasse, Kevin Koh and E.J. Googins also placed third (1:38.30).

The Polar Bears are scheduled to return to the pool after Thanksgiving when they return to Cambridge to compete in the two-day MIT Invitational on Nov. 30.
