The high school-aged Junior Rowers of the Merrymeeting Community Rowing Association have completed their first competitive season and have been successful on many fronts.

MCRA attended the New England High School and Juniors Championship Regatta on Lake Quinsigamond near Worcester, Mass., on Oct. 9 and came back with hardware. The Men’s Novice 4-plus coxswain took the gold in the two-mile event against 12 other crews with the fastest time of 14.28. The Women’s Novice 4-plus Coxswain took the silver against 10 other boats with the time of 16.12.

On October 16, MCRA Juniors rowed a longer three-mile course in the New Hampshire Championships/George Dirth Memorial Regatta in Pembroke, N.H. Again the crews came in on top, finishing fourth in each of their races. The men faced 17 boat crews and finished in 18:59, while the women rowed against 12 boats and had a time of 20:38.

“I’m so proud of our Junior crews, their parents, and the coaching. Our efforts to build a competitive team based on our mission of education is being realized, and we are excited about future growth in the Junior Division.” said MCRA Board President Scott Bailey.

The rowers and coxswains include Brunswick High School, Mt. Ararat, Baxter Academy and homeschooled students who have been training and learning the sport of rowing since the spring. Practices are five days a week and include water and land workouts.

The men’s team is made up of Bow, Quinn Solberg, Two Seat, Orion Sargent, Three Seat, Brian Hess, Stroke, Nick White, and Coxswain, Emma Slocum. The women’s team is Bow, Julia Krutul, Two Seat, Lydia Hollen, Three Seat, Rochelle Maderal, Stroke, Paige MacKinnon, and Coxswain, Samantha Palma.

“Before the regattas, we were untested and unsure where we’d rank amongst other New England crews. It’s clear now that we’re competitive and further, our positive and supportive culture makes MCRA a fun place to row,” said coach Anna Jordan.

Registration for the teen spring season will be announced at rowbrunswick.org. For more information visit the website, the Merrymeeting Rowing Facebook page, or contact Jordan at programs@rowbrunswick.org.
