The January 25 concert by Bates artist-in-residence Frank Glazer with Lydian String Quartet violinist Daniel Stepner has been canceled. Pianist Frank Glazer died on January 12 at the age of 99 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.

Frank Glazer was born in Chester, Wisconsin. He played in Berlin as a teen, and made his New York debut in 1936. Prior to World War II, he also played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

He served as an interpreter during World War II. After he came home, he worked to reinvent piano technique, studying anatomy to make playing the instrument more comfortable. He credited his new technique for the longevity of his career.

In 1952, he married classical singer Ruth Gevalt, who died in 2006. From 1965 until 1980, Glazer taught at the Eastman School of Music. With Ruth, the two founded the Saco River Festival in Maine, a summer chamber series.

Glazer has been the longtime artist-in-residence at Bates College, and had played with virtually every orchestra, quartet, and arts organization in the region.

He had been hospitalized in recent weeks, and suffered from congestive heart failure. Glazer would have turned 100 on February 19.
