Friends of Merrymeeting Bay continues its 16th annual Winter Speaker Series at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9.
The program, “Lighthouses of the Kennebec,” features lighthouse historian Duane Prugh and painter, photographer, writer and former lighthouse keeper Ernest DeRaps.
The presentation follows the annual meeting and potluck supper beginning at 6. The public is invited to the supper and brief business meeting as well.
Prugh is a semi-retired computer consultant who has been interested in the technical aspects of Maine’s lighthouses, covered bridges and waterfalls.
Special guest Ernest DeRaps is a former lighthouse keeper who kept the light on Monhegan, Vinalhaven and in Stockton Springs while in the Coast Guard.
The series takes place monthly from October to May on the second Wednesday of the month.
The series, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Friends of Merrymeeting Bay with support and valuable door prizes from Patagonia outlet in Freeport.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
