AUGUSTA (AP) — Abortion foes and those who support women’s reproductive choice will each mark the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that created a constitutional right to abortions in some circumstances and prevented states from banning the practice.
In Augusta, the Maine Choice Coalition plans a news conference today to celebrate the decision. Speakers will address the history of the issue and the work of the coalition in 2013 and beyond.
On Thursday, more than 100 Maine Catholics will begin their journey to Washington, D.C., to participate in the 2013 March for Life, which is set for Friday afternoon following a noon rally on the National Mall. The march is an annual event protesting abortion on or around the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
