YARMOUTH
The Yarmouth/Freeport/Gray-New Gloucester girls hockey team hung tough with Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland on Wednesday at Travis Roy Arena in high school action.
But, the Red Hornets managed to skate away with a 6-4 win, dropping the Clippers to 5-8.
The Red Hornets struck for three goals in the first period, and Clippers forward Katie Clemmer tallied the lone goal for the hosts.
Clemmer scored three more goals in the second period, each one drawing the Clippers to within a goal.
Mariah Vaillancourt scored with 19 seconds left in the middle frame to give the Red Hornets a 6-4 lead through two periods.
Neither team found the net in the third period.
Caroline Grant had two assists for the Clippers, with Sophie Newberg and Margaret Perrotta each picking up an assist.
The visitors owned an 18-14 shot advantage, with Yarmouth/ Freeport – Gray-New Gloucester goaltenders Violette Leith (two saves) and Isabelle King (10 saves) splitting time.
The Clippers visit Winslow/Gardiner on Monday at 1:40 p.m.
Boys hockey
ROCHESTER, N.H. —
Mitchell Adams scored twice as South Portland/ Freeport/Waynflete ended a six-game winless streak with a 6-1 win over Noble/Wells at Rochester Ice Arena.
Deven Hannah and Ian Young each chipped in a goal in the opening period as the Red Riots (2-5-1) scored four goals over a 2:32 stretch.
The Red Riots tallied five power-play goals and scored one short-handed.
Young added a second goal, and Max Winson finished the scoring for the visitors, who visit Massabesic/ Bonny Eagle/Old Orchard Beach on Saturday at 8 p.m.
Seth Batchelder scored the lone goal for Noble/Wells (3-4).
Girls basketball
FREEPORT — The host Falcons out-scored Sacopee Valley, 19-7, in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind 42-34 Western Maine Conference win over the Hawks in makeup action.
Freeport (6-2) jumped out to a 16-2 first-quarter lead, but Sacopee Valley chipped away and trailed 20-13 at the half. The Hawks rallied in the third to take a 27-23 to the final frame.
Regan Lynch had 13 points for the Falcons, while Taylor Rinaldi chipped in nine.
Helen Ruhlin had a game-high 15 points for the Hawks.
Freeport hosts Lake Region tonight at 7 p.m.
Boys basketball
NAPLES — Mark Mayo scored 14 points to power Lake Region to a 54-40 WMC win over Freeport.
The Lakers (4-5) posted quarter leads of 9-7, 26-19 and 41-29 in earning the win, dropping the Falcons to 2-6.
Tyler Walker and True Meyer each scored 10 points for Lake Region.
For Freeport, Eriksen Shea led the way with 12 points, followed by Ethan Sclar with seven.
Freeport hosts Yarmouth on Saturday at 6 p.m.
