Money saved by mild winter weather and unfilled municipal staff positions could help fill budget holes in fiscal year 2014.

During a meeting Tuesday morning, Town Manager Gary Brown and staffers looked at areas to save money during the remainder of the current year, which ends June 30, in anticipation of deep budget cuts at the state level for next year.

“We’re looking at where we can achieve some savings from personnel and from the winter budget,” Brown said. “But we’re not cutting staff or programs at this time.”

Some positions were vacant for part of the year, and the money dedicated to pay those salaries will show as a surplus, however modest, at year’s end.

“We will end this year with some savings in the budget,” Brown said.
