AUGUSTA — The Hyde School boys cross country team captured the MAISAD Championship Friday at the University of Maine-Augusta.
The defending champion Phoenix dominated the field of MAISAD schools, capping off their two-year run with 41 points to beat out Gould (55), Seacoast Christian (69), Hebron Academy (96) and Kents Hill (97).
The first mile was action paced as Hyde’s Cody Mitchell battled Seacoast runner Isaac LaCroix (first, 16:20) and Hebron’s Makoto Wantanabe (second, 16:35). The first-mile split was 5:39 by the lead runners.
Mitchell finished third overall with a time of 16:51 on the three-mile course.
Hyde placed four runners in the top 10 and five in the top 11, led by Paloa Griffin (8th, 17:38), Talin Rowe (9, 17:39), Luis Allen (10, 17:41) and Austin Wang (11, 17:48).
“I’m really proud of how my teammates came through today.” said Isaac Preston, who finished 15th. “I wasn’t able to really do my best because of my ankle. Those guys were incredible.”
“Those guys broke the field early. It was an amazing thing to watch, the way they ran together,” said coach Peter E. Rowe. “I don’t know if they realize how incredible they were. They touched greatness today!”
Next up for the Phoenix are New Englands, set to be held this upcoming Saturday at Milbridge, Conn.
