BATH — The Hyde School football team returned ‘home’ Saturday to host Hebron Academy under the lights at McMann Field — usually the home of the Morse Shipbuilders, and the Phoenix prevailed 40-33.

The first quarter was all Hyde as Steven Dwight took the ball on the first play from scrimmage and rambled 55 yards for the score.

Less than three minutes later on the fourth Phoenix play from scrimmage, Dwight once again rumbled 55 yards.

Hyde scored again, capping a 74-yard drive in four plays (including a 28-yard completion to tight end Ben Burlock) on a five-yard push from Terry Norris for a 19-0 lead.

On Hyde’s first play from scrimmage in the second quarter, Lumberjack Chad Manchulenko intercepted a Phoenix pass, and five plays later, Shaquille Cezot-Holmes swept off tackle for 21 yards to get Hebron on the board.

Two minutes and four plays later, Dwight capped a 48-yard drive with his third touchdown to make it 25-7.

With 3:34 to go in the half, Cezot-Holmes scored his second TD on an 18-yard run.

On the next series Hyde was forced to punt and Cezot-Holmes struck again with a 66-yard punt return for a 25-21 game with 1:02 to go in the half.

Hyde took the ensuing kickoff and ran it back to the He-44, and Evander Lenardson (six completions for 62 yards) found Troy Jones all alone for a 44-yard score with 37 seconds left.

Hyde’s Austin Makris, Jack Howarth and Zach Mann came up with sacks and tackles to slow the Lumberjacks down. Lenardson also had an interception, and Burlock, Jones and Zach Messina each came up with stops.

However, Cezot-Holmes broke through and scampered 75 yards. On the ensuing 2-point conversion, the Lumberjack running back fumbled on the Hy-7 and Norris scooped up the ball and ran 93 yards for two points. Hyde led 34-27 with 1:39 to go in the third.

As the quarter closed, Dwight and Burlock combined to move the ball to the He-2. Norris scored with 18 seconds gone in the fourth for a 40-27 lead.

Five seconds later Cezot-Holmes scampered 54 yards for another TD.

Later, Dwight ran 47 yards to the He-1 before he was tackled and stripped of the ball that then went out of bounds in the endzone for a touchback. Hebron had the ball on its own 20.

However, Lenardson came up with his second interception.

Hyde is scheduled to host the final game of the season next Saturday at 2 p.m. versus the Hyde Wolfpack of Woodstock.
