
The Brunswick High School girls swimming team put together several solid performances, including a record by University of Southern California bound Caitlin Tycz, in finishing second in the State Class A Girls Swimming Championship at Bowdoin College on Tuesday.
The Dragons were runners-up to Cony, which won six of the 13 events in racking up 311 points. Brunswick’s 246 points were second, with Cheverus (215), Bangor (214) and Falmouth (165) rounding out the top five.
Tycz won three events, setting a state mark in the 200- yard freestyle in 1:50.35. She also won the 100 butterfly, and was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team, along with teammates Ella Tycz, Mallory Palmer and Emily Cowan. The foursome finished the event in 1:45.53.
Brunswick was second in the 400 free relay and sixth in the 200 medley relay.
The day started with the 1- meter diving competition, with Nina Greenwood of Cheverus taking the win. Brunswick’s Dina Murphy was fourth and teammate Sabina Smith claimed fifth.
After Caitlin Tycz won the 200 free, Alex Morse took eighth and Ella Tycz 14th in the 200 IM, and Cowan claimed sixth in the 50 free. Cowan also earned points for the Dragons, finishing 10th in the 100 free, with teammate Mallory Palmer earning 13th in the event. Morse’s third-place finish in the 500 free earned points, along with Hannah Escoe finishing 13th, while Sophie Blair was ninth in the 100 back, Ella Tycz 10th in the 100 breaststroke and Escoe 14th in the breaststroke.
Mt. Ararat
The Eagles put together a solid afternoon as part of their 16th-place overall finish with 47 points.
After a season-best time in the 200 medley relay by Kaitlyn Doughty, Madigan Saunders, Madelin Svetin and Abby Anderson in 2:05.62, Saunders swam to a fourth-place finish in the 50 free. She also took sixth in the 100 free, earning a pair of personal-best performances.
Svetin was 16th in the 100 fly (personal best), while Doughty also swam a personal-best time in the 100 back.
The Eagles’ foursome of Keri Lachapelle, Anderson, Laura Secone and Saunders were 13th in the 200 freestyle relay, with another season-best time for Mt. Ararat.
Cony was solid across the board, with Cecilia Guadalupi winning a pair of individual events — the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. The Rams also were victorious in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, while Anne Guadalupi captured the 500 freestyle title and Talia Jorgensen the 100 free.
Abby Longstaff of Cheverus won the 50 free and 100 backstroke in the Stags’ third-place showing.
