The Brunswick Rotary Club presented its 12th “historic site” recognition to the town of Brunswick on Monday at the Brunswick Station Visitor Center.

A 14-inch-by-28-inch bronze plaque was unveiled on an exterior wall of the visitor center, recognizing the history of rail transportation in Brunswick, according to Brunswick Rotary President David Gleason.

Gleason told those in attendance rail transportation to Brunswick began in 1849, primarily to haul gravel, with depots built in 1855, 1857 and 1899 for passengers travelling to and from Brunswick.

A new train platform was completed last year as the Amtrak Downeaster began service on Nov. 1 after a 52-year absence of passenger train transportation, he said.

Town Manager Gary Brown accepted the plaque on behalf of the town, and thanked the Brunswick Rotary Club for its initiative and contribution to giving public visibility to this aspect of the heritage and history o f Brunswick. Rotarian Chuck Mull and the Rotary Pride and Her- itage Committee were recognized for their work in developing the text of the plaque over the past year.
