Seventeen workers will be laid off at Bath Iron Works next month, but those workers may be able to fill other positions.

BIW alerted the Local S6, BIW’s largest union, of the layoffs on Friday.

“We notified Local 6 that 17 outside machinists would be laid off as of the first part of April,” said BIW spokesperson David Hench.

The layoffs do not reflect a decrease in BIW employment, because the company is opening 17 other positions. Hench expressed the shipyard’s hope that those being laid off would be able to fill those new positions.

“We’re hiring another classification, so the hope is that they’ll all be able to slide into other jobs with the company,” he said.
