FREEPORT — Dozens of horse barns will open their paddock gates Saturday, May 18 for the second annual Maine Equestrian Open Barn Day.

Visitors can meet horses; talk with trainers, breeders and riding instructors; participate in activities and watch riding demonstrations.

Locally, the Freeport Equestrian Center — home to 18 horses and devoted to the discipline of dressage, a French word for training — will welcome guests with a demonstration ride and bake sale. There will also be dressage lessons, test riding, a jumping lesson and forums on starting and handling a young horse. There will also be an opportunity to talk with trainers and students.

The center at 32 Webster Road will welcome the public 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
