WASHINGTON — Maine’s congressional delegation announced its nominees to the U.S. Service Academies — the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y.
To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, applicants must be nominated by an authorized nominating source, which includes members of Congress.
“This strong group of students represent some of Maine’s best and brightest,” U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-1st District, said. “We are very lucky that they have chosen to offer their talents in service to the country and it’s an honor to nominate them.”
The nominees were interviewed by a panel of six on their academic record, test scores, leadership ability, involvement in extra-curricular activities, and exemplified commitment to serving their country.
Of the 24 nominees are Rolando Amador of Harpswell, Chad Kousky of Brunswick, James Sciretta of Bath and Theron Wilgus of Phippsburg.
Fryeburg Academy announces new scholarships
FRYEBURG — Fryeburg Academy has announced a new scholarship opportunity for Maine residents. The scholarship, named for Bion R. Cram, class of 1933, covers tuition and room and board in full for a student.
In addition to the one full scholarship awarded to the Bion R. Cram Scholar, a number of partial scholarships will be awarded to qualified applicants.
Cram, who passed away in 2008, bequeathed $15 million to the school to establish endowments for financial aid scholarships and academic resources. Born and raised in Maine, he attended Fryeburg Academy and Bowdoin College.
“Mr. Cram’s generosity will provide young men and women from Maine the same opportunity presented to him those many years ago,” states a news release. “Bion knew that it was the generosity of others that empowered him early on and felt fortunate to have had so many opportunities.”
In addition to the academy’s regular application requirements, students who wish to be considered for the scholarship must submit an additional essay and travel to the campus to interview with the scholarship search committee.
