AUGUSTA (AP) — The University of Maine at Augusta is celebrating the launch of its new aviation program.
The university and Maine Instrument Flight are holding an open house at the flight school’s Augusta State Airport hangar today to celebrate the new bachelor of science in aviation program.
Developed in partnership with Maine Instrument Flight, the program enables students to earn a degree and become an FAA-certified commercial pilot at the same time. The program is the first of its kind in Maine and is expected to help meet growing national demand for pilots.
More than 150 people are expected at today’s open house, which will feature remarks from university officials, the president of Maine Instrument Flight, a state senator and others.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
