PORTLAND — In last Saturday’s 2.4 mile Peaks to Portland swim, three Polar Bear Masters claimed victory in their age groups.

Brian Cullen was tops among men 70 years and older; Lib Butler celebrated “aging up” by capturing the women’s 60-69 title; and Pam Torrey won the women’s 50-59 age group, placing second among all women entrants.

The victorious Polar Bear Masters credit coaches Dave Bright and Brad Burnham with whipping them into shape, and kayak guides Jim Brokaw and Tony Chodorowski for keeping them on course.

Additionally, Brunswick’s Ben Morse claimed fourth place in the men’s 40-49 age group and 13th overall, while Bath residents Courtney Linville (third among women 40-49) and Mike Hurd (ninth among men 40-49) also competed.

In all, 345 swimmers completed the grueling swim, made even more challenging by chilly air temperatures and choppy seas.
