BATH

Bath police rescued an allegedly inebriated Phippsburg woman Tuesday morning after she was pulled into the current of the Kennebec River while swimming.

Just after 9 a.m., a passerby called police to report a woman screaming from the water a few hundred yards from shore, Bath Police Lt. Robert Savary said Tuesday afternoon.

The woman had apparently gone for a swim and been pulled into the strong current of the river, according to Savary.

When officers arrived at the North End boat launch, a man who happened to be putting his boat in the water drove them out, and they pulled the 32-year-old woman into the boat.

A Bath Iron Works security boat also assisted.

The woman was evaluated by Bath EMS and driven home by Bath police, Savary said.

No charges have been filed.
