Bath Iron Works is getting another $87.2 million from the Navy.
According to the Department of Defense, the contract is part of the shipyard’s ongoing work to provide design, planning and material support for the maintenance and modernization of Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates. The Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are primary type of ship being produced by Bath Iron Works currently, and it was a major producer of Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates in the past.
The cost-plus-award-fee contract is for $87,218,473. Work is expected to be completed by February of 2019.
The news was heralded by Sens. Susan Collins, RMaine, and Angus King, I-Maine, in a joint statement.
“This announcement is welcome news for the hardworking men and women at Bath Iron Works,” they said. “This funding demonstrates the Navy’s continued commitment to BIW and its confidence in the shipyard’s highly skilled employees, who are vital to Maine’s economy and to our nation’s security.”
BIW has provided planning yard services for Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and Oliver Hazard Perry-class for several years now.
