On Sept.1 the Library will launch the Make Change for Patten fundraiser. The Library is asking patrons to pick up one of the 100 OXO brand containers donated by Now You’re Cooking, and fill it with their change for 30 days. The fundraiser ends on Sept. 30 with a celebration in the Children’s Room including snacks, story time and a sing-along. Money raised by the Coin Squad will be used to purchase educational and literacy board games for the Children’s Room.
Come to a special afterschool reading of Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree,” from 4-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22. This short story is a tale about the selfless services an apple tree offers a growing boy. The tree allows the boy to sell her apples for money, use her branches to build a home, and use her as a bench a sit on. Author Silverstein shows everyone the benefits of selfless giving.
Carol McFadden, Head of Children’s Services, said “This is a positive way to teach children about altruism, involving them with the concept of raising money for a worth-while cause that will benefit all children and their families.”

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
