Regional School Unit 5 directors will wait until Oct. 2 to decide if they want to put a Freeport High School bond referendum on the Nov. 5 ballot.
The RSU 5 Board of Directors was poised to do that as they walked into the high school for Wednesday night’s meeting, but then learned:
— a group of Freeport residents has begun circulating a petition for withdrawal from RSU 5, and
— consultants have completed report of the impact withdrawal would have on the town.
Results of the consultants’ study will be posted today at the Town Office.
That information suddenly before them, school board members had to decide if it was best to put the $14.6 million renovation bond and a companion $1.7 million athletic facilities upgrade to a November vote.
The basic plan Is $580,000 less than a project defeated by RSU 5 voters last June, and voters have the option of saving another $1.7 million.
They voted 10-1 to wait until Oct. 2, which is about as long as they can hold off and still put the questions to voters on Nov. 5.
