LEWISTON (AP) — The owners of the Portland Pirates minor league hockey team have scheduled a news conference to announce their plans for the upcoming season, fueling speculation they’ll play more games and perhaps their entire home schedule in Lewiston.
The news conference is scheduled for this afternoon at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston.
The Pirates, the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes, are currently locked in a lease dispute with the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland.
The Pirates planned to play 13 games in Lewiston this season as the Portland arena undergoes renovations. It’s about 40 miles between the cities.
Colisee manager Mike Cain told the Portland Press Herald he finds it hard to believe the Pirates would hold a news conference in Lewiston to announce they’re playing in Portland.
