TOPSHAM

With Halloween approaching, you will likely see their likeness alongside witches, goblins and ghouls.

Fear them or not, bats really do exist and the public is invited to Tophsam Public Library on Oct. 29 to learn all about these creatures of the night.

The “Bats!” program is offered by the Cathance River Education Alliance and the Topsham Public Library and runs from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the library, 25 Foreside Road.

“Bats, our only flying mammal, are super-important, yet terribly misunderstood,” a news release issued by CREA states. “As the sun sets, these heroes of the night help us all by consuming up to 900 mosquitos an hour! Scientist Trevor Peterson of Stantec Environmental Consulting has studied bat populations at the Cathance Preserve and throughout the Gulf of Maine and New England using acoustic monitoring devices.”

Peterson will share his expertise at this community program event on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

“We’ll learn about the risks to this creature, and discover how local scientists and students keep a close eye on our bat populations.”

These community programs are family friendly, free, and open to the public; and held at Topsham Public Library the last Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
