AUGUSTA — H. Sawin Millett Jr., who has decades of service in two branches of Maine state government, is facing a hearing on his nomination as finance commissioner.
Millett’s confirmation hearing this afternoon comes at a sensitive time for Maine finances, as lawmakers try to close a big gap between expected revenues and spending obligations in the state budget.
Fiscal issues are not new to Millett, whose 12 years of legislative service includes ranking Republican on the Appropriations Committee. Millett, of Waterford, also served as chief budget adviser during Gov. Paul LePage’s transition.
Millett served as finance commissioner under former Gov. John McKernan. He’s also been education commissioner and associate commissioner of the former mental health department.
Millett is well-respected by both parties and is expected to win confirmation easily.
