SANFORD — A man escaped injury early this morning when his car burst into flames soon after he got out of it.
The driver was on his way to work and told authorities he smelled a funny odor, so he stopped the car and got out near the intersection of Route 4 and New Dam Road around 5 a.m., said Sanford Fire Department Lt. Scott Chase.
Another motorist, who was driving behind the man, also stopped and said he had seen sparks emanating from underneath the vehicle. The driver went to a nearby store and called the fire department.
Chase said the car was fully involved with fire when firefighters arrived. The vehicle is expected to be a total loss.
Neither the driver nor firefighters were injured.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
