Several hundred people gathered on the village green in Casco last Saturday afternoon to witness the unveiling of a new war memorial honoring all Casco war veterans.
The black granite memorial stands about 5 feet tall, 1 foot wide and measures about 12 feet long. It is adorned with seals from the four service branches as well as the U.S. Coast Guard and Merchant Marine.
Casco native Tom Hancock officiated at the ceremony. Featured speakers included Sen. Bill Diamond, Rep. Rich Cebra, Phil Cole, Casco Town Manager Dave Morton and Selectman Calvin Nutting.
Delvin Merrill, a prisoner of war during the Korean War who was born in Casco but now lives in Naples, placed a rose on the memorial during the ceremony in memory of those Casco veterans who have died.
The dedication ceremony was the result of about a year of fundraising, which raised $22,000. The monument was created and erected by Collette Monuments of Lewiston.
