BUXTON – Voters in Buxton, one of five towns in Maine School Administrative District 6, narrowly rejected the school’s $42.6 million proposed budget Tuesday, 522-514.
But, it appeared early Wednesday that voters in the five-community district overall approved the school budget. The unofficial tally was 1,553-1,440.
Buxton voters also said no, 544-511, to a SAD 6 proposal that would demolish the vacant Hollis Learning Center and the vacant administrative building in Buxton, if the school district hadn’t sold or otherwise transferred the properties by Nov. 1.
In municipal elections, Penny J. Booker convincingly won a three-year term on the Buxton Board of Selectmen, defeating Randy Breault, 730-206.
“I do appreciate the people who came out to vote and thank the people who voted for me,” Booker said Wednesday, “and, I’ll do my best to do a good job for the town.”
Booker, 62, won the selectman’s seat held by Peter Burns, who did not seek re-election. Booker was elected in her second bid for the five-member board. Last year, she finished fourth in a field of seven candidates with two terms available.
Jacob Stoddard and Tracey Kane were elected to three-year terms on the town’s Budget Committee. Stoddard tallied 806 votes; while as write-in candidates, Kane received 13 votes, defeating Mark Blier with 7.
In uncontested races for directors of School Administrative District 6, incumbents Stephen Heroux and Lawrence Miller, vice chairman, were re-elected to three-year terms and another incumbent Nicole Peabody, one year.
For the Buxton Planning Board, its current treasurer Lawrence Curtis, and Keith Emery, a former member and chairman, were unchallenged for three-year terms.
In municipal referendums, voters favored amending the tax-acquired property ordinance but defeated amending an ordinance about building on non-conforming vacant lots.
Hiram Davis was chosen Tuesday as moderator for the Buxton town meeting, which opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, to decide on a municipal budget.
Charisse Keach, Buxton treasurer, said the town’s proposed budget is $5,160,908.50, up $144,554, or 2.88 percent, from this year’s $5,016,354.50.
Town Clerk John Myers reported 5,867 registered Buxton voters with 1,087 casting municipal ballots, representing a 18.5 percent turnout. In the school budget validation referendum, Myers said 1,084 ballots were cast.
In the contested Democratic state primary for state Senate District 5, Linda Valentino defeated Donald Pilon, 197-133, in Buxton balloting.
