Society presents history contest awards

Westbrook Historical Society presented awards to the winners of the first Westbrook History Contest on June 2 during the Westbrook Together Day’s festivities.

Entries were received from as far away as California, Florida and Michigan, covering subjects about Westbrook businesses, families, childhood memories and history; and entries were submitted from people ages 8 to 86.

The winners were as follows:

Student winners, second place: Morgan Rielly for interview (Arthur and Bill Currier); first place: Crystal Card’s third-grade class at Congin School for PowerPoint slide show of history of Westbrook, covering its river, people and places.

Adult entries, second place:- ?Craig Siulinski of California, The Art of Good Business (about The Men’s Shop); ?first place and $50, Beth Paulsen-Olmsted and Charles Marsters, for 511 Main St., (about the owners and businesses at that address).

The historical society thanked judges Roger Knight, who first stimulated an interest in forming the historical society; Julie Peterson, curator of the local History Room at the Walker Library; and to Roberta Morrill, retired Westbrook teacher and vice president of the society. It also thanks all those who entered this year and hope they’ll submit another entry again next year.

“The stories give a wonderful, diverse history of our city,” Donna Conley of the historical society said in a statement.

Gousse earns degree

Joseph Gousse has graduated summa cum laude and received a bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of New England.

In August, he will attend, the University of Maine School of Law in Portland. Gousse is a 2008 graduate of Westbrook High School and the son of Marc and Jeanne Gousse of Westbrook.

Gousse was a member of the honors program for the Political Science Department and College of Arts and Sciences. This past April, he received the department’s highest award for academic excellence presented by Dr. Ali Ahmida at the university’s spring awards ceremony.

Gousse has also been recognized as a nominee for the Jacques Down Award. In addition to his studies, Gousse was an active member of UNE’s Mock Trial team; a member of Alpha Chi National Honor Society; and President of “People of Politics,” UNE’s Political Science Club.

Summer concert schedule set

A free series of summer concerts 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday evenings in Riverbank Park on Main Street begin on June 27 and continue through Aug. 15.

The Westbrook City Band opens the seven-week series on June 27 followed by Pretty Girls Sing Soprano, July 11; Hurricanes, July 18; David Good, July 25; Stolen Mojo, Aug. 1; Get Back, Aug. 8; and Flashback, Aug. 15.

Flag Day observance

Robert Barton of American Legion Post 62 has announced a Flag Day ceremony at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, in Riverbank Park on Main Street.

Boy Scout yard sale

Boy Scout Troop 83 will host a yard sale from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, at Highland Lake Congregational Church, 1303 Bridgton Road (Route 302). Donated items may be dropped off Friday, June 22, from 6-8 p.m. or for pick up call Michael Gately at 751-9730.

Dean’s list students

Four students from Westbrook have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Husson College. The students are Christopher Aube, Robert Aube, Risca Lane and Justin J. Richards.
