A Standish man has been indicted after police found drugs in his car when they pulled him over for driving erratically and leaving the scene of an accident Dec. 2.

Richard Childs, 31, was indicted for possession of heroin, crack and Soboxone, leaving the scene of an accident, violating conditions of release and operating under the influence.

Just after he was arrested, he claimed the drugs in his car were placed there by others and he was driving erratically because he forgot his glasses, according to court records.

According to a statement by Maine State Police Trooper Joseph Bureau, Childs hit a parked sport utility vehicle in the Marden’s parking lot in Gray and then fled the scene Dec. 2. Police later stopped Childs in the parking lot of Hannaford in Falmouth.

Though Bureau wrote that Childs was noticeably impaired, Childs said at the time that he was not under the influence and was going Christmas shopping. When asked why he hit a car and left, Childs said he couldn’t see well without his glasses.

When police searched his car, they found Soboxone and a white powder found to be a cocaine-heroin mix.

Childs was arrested a little over a year earlier for burglary, aggravated assault, robbery, assault, use of disabling chemicals and criminal mischief.
