State Rep. Gary Plummer, R-Windham, has been reappointed to the Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety for the 124th Legislature. This marks the third consecutive Legislature during which he has served on this panel, which exercises jurisdiction over a broad range of law enforcement activities.

“I am very pleased to be returning to the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee,” said Rep. Plummer. “My lengthy experience with county government has been of great help to me in dealing with corrections and public safety issues. With a reduced budget, we need to work as hard as we can to make sure that every dollar is spent wisely and that people’s safety is not jeopardized.”

Rep. Plummer, a retired teacher, has served as a member of the Windham Town Council and as a Cumberland County commissioner.

The Maine Legislature has 17 joint standing committees, each composed of 13 members – three senators and 10 members of the House. Every committee has jurisdiction over clearly defined parts of state government.

The Criminal Justice Committee has jurisdiction over the Department of Public Safety, the Maine criminal code, sentencing, adult and juvenile corrections, probation and parole, county jails and firearms. It also oversees private investigators, security guards, the Maine Emergency Management Agency, and such violations as operating under the influence and operating after suspension.

Rep. Plummer is a third-term legislator representing House District 111, which includes part of Windham.
