Are you changing your driving habits considering the high price of gasoline?
Al Baxter, 66, Windham
“I’m slowing down. Slow down, save gas. I also put it on cruise control. I’ve heard that’s supposed to help. But, I wonder where the price is going to stop and if there’s going to be enough gas. We hear there’s going to be a shortage. By the way, when I went to high school, gas was 16 cents a gallon. Unbelievable.”
Michael Peterson, 20, Westbrook
“I find myself carpooling with friends more. I’m only driving my vehicle to and from work and to and from the grocery store. I haven’t even paid off my truck yet but I’m at the point where I have to get something that’s more fuel-efficient.”
Samantha Beesley, 19, Westbrook
“I just got my license and I remember prices being really low – around $1.20. Now it costs me over $42 to fill my tank. That’s nuts. You know what would help is if public transport went to more areas than it does. There should be more buses connecting Westbrook to places like North Windham and South Portland.”
Lynne Estey, 40, Raymond and son Noah
“Absolutely. I’ve already implemented carpooling with three other teachers from my area. And I’ve actually cancelled one trip Downeast in October so we can hunker down and see what gas prices do. I also contacted my local oil company at the midnight hour and locked in for home heating oil. Many companies are no longer offering that.”
Judy Corkum, 66, Gray
“Yes. We save up on our trips and appointments so we can do it all in one day. We were going to go on vacation this year, but because of the gas situation we’re not going. I’m wondering if the other countries are going to come to our aid. I don’t blame anyone. I do think the liberals have kept us from drilling in our own country, though. It’s time we start taking care of ourselves.”
Pat Henckle, 74, Standish and husband Erland
“A little after 9 a.m. on Wednesday it was $2.79 a gallon. At 3 p.m. on Wednesday it was $2.99. On Friday at 11 a.m. it was $3.27. We could be worse off, though. We could be down south. We’ll have to economize because we’re on a fixed income. We’re not going to take day trips around the area.”
