GORHAM – Diagnosed with high-risk cancer, Angelo Sotiropoulos, owner of the Gorham House of Pizza, came home encouraged after meeting with four doctors in Boston last week.

Doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital told Sotiropoulos on May 17 that his prostate cancer was in its first stages and hadn’t spread.

“I came back with a feeling of relief,” Sotiropoulos said Friday. “It’s treatable.”

He’s planning to undergo a procedure and treatment and was to meet May 22 with a surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital for a final consultation.

“With their ability to treat people and God’s will, I’ll be around for a long time,” Sotiropoulos said.

Sotiropoulos was diagnosed with prostate cancer shortly after a fire shut down the Gorham House of Pizza in April. Last week’s diagnosis in Boston followed an earlier, dire report by one doctor.

“The reality is it’s a high-risk disease,” Sotiropoulos said Friday.

The fire caused extensive damage to his building in the heart of Gorham Village but Sotiropoulos hopes to re-open his restaurant within a few months.

The community is planning a fundraiser for Sotiropoulos and his employees from 2-10 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, in the Costello Field House on the Gorham campus of the University of Southern Maine.
