Rielly to address library friends

Friends of Walker Memorial Library will hold its annual meeting at Walker Memorial Library, 800 Main St., at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 24.

Following a business meeting, Saint Joseph College Professor Edward Rielly will speak about language change. His talk is entitled, “A Slippery Slope or Change We Can Believe In?”

Rielly will explore how change is a natural part of any living language. Historically, English has undergone tremendous changes since it began to evolve out of various Germanic dialects in the fifth century.

Prescriptive grammarians have tried unsuccessfully to freeze the language in favor of a language ideal. English keeps evolving, adding new words, changing meanings, altering pronunciations, not unlike the way a family may change over generations.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

A Westbrook milestone

Mary K. Libby, past president of Westbrook Woman’s Club, was recently elected vice president of General Federation of Women’s Clubs in Maine at a spring convention in Orono.

It marks the first time in the Westbrook club’s 92 years that a member has been elected to state office. Libby will serve a two-year term.

Libby and her husband, Bruce, live in Westbrook.

Also at the convention, Westbrook Woman’s Club was awarded the Carolyn Lombardi trophy, the highest award bestowed by the state body. It was awarded based on amount of scholarships the club sponsors, size of the club and its involvement with the state and national group of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

It marks the sixth time the Westbrook Woman’s Club has won the award.
