STANDISH – Rachelle Messuri scored on an assist from Carley Denis with 13:49 left in regulation after a scramble in front of the net to lift St. Joseph’s to a 1-0 college field hockey win over Salem State on Tuesday.

Taylor Allison made one save to record her sixth shutout of the season for the Monks (8-4), tying the school single-season record set by Meaghan Johnson in 2011.

Michelle Boyer had 10 saves for Salem State (8-4), which was outshot 18-3 by the Monks (8-4).

 

BATES 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Nicole Santosuosso redirected a pass from Laura Baran to open the scoring in the 23rd minute and Polly Merck added a goal 25 seconds into the second half to lead the Bobcats (4-6) to a win over the Huskies (5-10) at Lewiston.

Bates keeper Cristina Vega made one save to record the shutout and Kayla Kennedy stopped 14 shots for the Huskies, who were outshot 37-5.

UNE 4, NICHOLS 3: Hannah Tavella tied it with 2:01 left in regulation, then scored off her rebound 5:03 into overtime to lift the Nor’easters (6-6, 3-2 Commonwealth Coast) over the Bison (7-6, 3-2) at Biddeford.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

BATES 3, UNE 2: Karen Lockhart scored from Julia Rafferty with less than 10 minutes remaining to give the Bobcats (3-6-1) a win over the Nor’easters (2-2) at Biddeford.

Bates took a 2-0 lead on goals by Sam Rose and Jaimie Cappucci. UNE got a goal from Nicole Fairfield in the 67th minute and Jackie Dickerson evened it 25 seconds before Rafferty’s winner.

TENNESSEE: Coach Derek Dooley is recovering from surgery on his fractured right hip and will coach from the press box Saturday at No. 19 Mississippi State.

 

TCU: Suspended QB Casey Pachall is leaving school for the rest of the semester and enrolling at an inpatient rehabilitation facility.

BOSTON COLLEGE: Brad Bates is the new athletic director after 10 years in that post at Miami (Ohio).

Bates succeeds Gene DeFilippo, who retired on Sept. 30 after 15 years in the position. He made the decision to step down after being diagnosed with a treatable form of melanoma.
