Taj Indian Cuisine has set up a refrigerator in the restaurant’s entryway stocked with free meals available to those in need through the holidays.

Owner Sai Guntaka said the meals — including chicken curry, butter chicken, mixed vegetable curry and chana masala — will be offered on an honor system, one per person. The food will be accessible whenever the restaurant is open, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Guntaka plans to keep the refrigerator filled through Christmas. He said he’s considering moving it to just outside the front entrance.

“If we can find a way to keep it secure, we’ll leave it out so anyone who needs something — even if it’s in the middle of the night — can just come and grab it,” Guntaka said.

In the last two weeks, Taj has churned out more than 6,000 free meals to people facing food insecurity in the wake of federal government cuts to SNAP benefits. The restaurant worked with volunteers to deliver the food around the area. “We were thankful we were able to do it and feed nearly 2,000 families,” Guntaka said.

Taj will also offer its free meal program on Thanksgiving Day, as it has in past years. Last year, Taj gave out about 1,200 Thanksgiving meals. The holiday meals — also available in a vegetarian option — include an appetizer, entree and bread.
