A new restaurant specializing in Asian hot pot meals opened recently on Western Avenue in the former site of Moe’s Original BBQ in South Portland.
Sun Korean Ramen House offers hot pot, ramen, rice and noodle bowls and a variety of pan-Asian appetizers. Manager Daniel Feng said the restaurant opened Oct. 13, but hasn’t yet launched a full marketing effort because the staff wants to use initial customer feedback to tweak and refine its dishes.
Feng said he believes Sun is the only dedicated hot pot restaurant in Maine, and he’s proud of the fact. The owner of Sichuan Kitchen planned to open Tuan Yuan Hot Pot last winter; Tuan Yuan’s social media posts suggest the project is still in the works, but the owner has not responded to requests for an update.
“We want to bring hot pot culture to Maine,” Feng said of the communal, cook-it-yourself style of dining, where diners dunk raw meat, seafood and vegetables into a pot of simmering broth set on burners in the middle of the table. “It’s something to share with family and friends.”
Sun seats about 100 customers. To drink, the restaurant offers bottled and canned beer, wine, soft drinks and bubble teas. Feng said they plan to add draft beers to their offerings.
Sun Korean Ramen House is open Monday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m, and Sunday 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.
