Douro, a Portuguese seafood restaurant from the hospitality group that owns Twelve and Evo Kitchen + Bar, is slated to open on Thames Street in Portland in early October.

The 100-seat venue is expected to launch in the city’s Foreside neighborhood at 100 Thames St., across from Twelve, on Thursday, Oct. 9.

“We have been talking about a restaurant like this for a while — taking the world-class seafood we have here in Maine and bringing it through a Portuguese lens,” Douro Executive Chef Colin Wyatt said in a news release.

Wyatt will run the Douro kitchen with Chef de Cuisine Jim Stein, who worked with him at Twelve, where the kitchen is now overseen by Executive Chef Hannah Ryder. “The simplicity and soul of Portuguese cooking lends itself to the way in which I personally prepare food for my family and friends, and I’m excited to share that with the community,” Wyatt added.

Core menu items include a raw bar seafood tower and the Cataplana, a traditional Portuguese seafood dish for two served in a copper pot. Other dishes include Little Neck Clams, Mussels Toast, Confit Cod, and Peri-Peri Chicken with Mushrooms and Farro. Executive Pastry Chef Georgia Macon, who also leads the pastry program at Twelve, will contribute sweets like Pastel de Nata and Almond Torte.

To drink, customers will have their choice of wines, Portuguese-themed cocktails, and a selection of port, cherry, madeira, beer and cider.

Douro’s name pays homage to Portugal’s Douro wine region, located along the Douro River that flows from Spain into Portugal. The restaurant is part of the Prentice Hospitality Group, which also operates Not a Bakery, Chebeague Island Inn, and The Good Table in Cape Elizabeth.
