The Hot Dog Safari, a non-profit group that raises money for charities that tackle food insecurity, is holding an event in Portland for the first time later this month.
Participants will meet at Allagash Brewing Company, at 50 Industrial Way, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, then try hot dogs at as many of the participating venues as they can before reconvening at Thirsty Pig at 5 p.m. to crown a winner. Safari venues are Bite Into Maine; Crispy Gai; High Roller Lobster Co.; King’s Head Pub; Red Snapper Express; and Thirsty Pig.
All proceeds raised will go to The Locker Project, a local food rescue program aimed at children in need.
“The only thing we love more than hot dogs is charity, and what better way to bring these worlds together than to support local business and have an excuse to hang with our friends,” said Tom Mahoney, founder and co-organizer of The Hot Dog Safari, in a news release. “What started as a fun event with a handful of friends has grown into a five-city organization and growing and we couldn’t be more thrilled.”
The Hot Dog Safari started in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 2011. Today, it also includes events in Naples, Florida, New Orleans and Austin, Texas.
