Bay Bowls, the Maine-based mini-chain specializing in superfood fruit bowls and smoothies, aims to open a location in downtown Freeport this fall.

Sal Matari, who co-founded Bay Bowls with his wife, Soraia, said their company’s newest location will be at 32 Main St., the former home of Sip House coffee shop. The Freeport store is licensed to owner Diane Bowley, Matari said.

The 1,000-square-foot space will have 15 seats, and be open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. As at Bay Bowls’ other locations, the menu at the Freeport shop will offer smoothies and fruit bowls featuring nutritionally dense “superfoods” like açaí and pitaya.

Matari said they hope to launch the new Bay Bowls by Oct. 1, noting that Freeport seems like a good fit. “There’s nothing there like it, and it’s a busy little area,” he said.

This will be the fourth Bay Bowls shop, and the second location the company opened just this year. Bay Bowls launched in 2020 in Brunswick, then opened a Portland store in 2022. This summer, Bay Bowls opened a location in Bath.

The Mataris hope to keep growing Bay Bowls in Maine. Matari said they’re looking for other licensees interested in launching locations in the state. “I’m looking all up and down the coast of Maine,” Matari said. “Our next stop, hopefully, would be in the Camden and Rockland area.”
